Casuarina Yakisugi pot - 'Burnie I'
Hand turned on the lathe by me from locally sourced Casuarina timber. The prominent medullary rays when burned, retain their shape as the softer surrounding timber is removed, creating a beautifully textured surface. This is then scrubbed to remove loose charcoal and sealed with oil to protect and highlight its features. Yakisugi is the traditional Japanese technique originally used to protect soft timbers like cedar for a harsh outdoor environment. However, it can be used on any timber to create a unique and durable surface.
This form I named Burnie as it reminds me of an old man weathered, cracked and sunburned yet full of experience and stories.

Product Care: This piece is finished with a mixture of beeswax and natural oil. It will develop a natural patina over time but if you wish to increase the sheen rub on a small amount of a food safe oil (Not Olive Oil or other Oils that go rancid). To clean dust, gently scrub with a soft bristle nail brush, or use a damp rag to wipe clean.
